Recent Events - 22-Apr-2007 - Organ Artists Series Concert featuring Carol Williams
San Diego Civic Organist, Artistic Director, Spreckels Organ Society in concert at Heinz Memorial Chapel on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh.
Carol brought some of the beautiful California weather with her! The last gasp of winter was still with the east coast at the beginning of the week, but the end of the week was shaping up to be a terrific spring weekend.
She had a chance to take in a view of the city and unwind after the long plane trip from the coast. Pictured, in the background, is the downtown Pittsburgh skyline with the Monongahela river immediately below the lookout point.
She was pretty brave too, taking a ride on the Duquesne Incline to get a view as it went down the mountain. It looks fine from the car (left) until you look down the track (right) - a sheer drop down the mountainside.

There wasn't much time to tour, she had to be off to practice at Heinz Memorial Chapel on the University of Pittsburgh campus.
A long practice session worked up an appetite! A quick ride up the street to the Squirrel Hill let Carol take a walk up the busy Forbes Avenue where she found a great Thai restaurant with a view of the bustling business district below.
Don Fellows (left), Organ Artists Series Chairman, was able to take a break from his weekend wedding schedule to enjoy a bite with Carol and catch up on some good conversation.
Yes, she did work up quite an appetite with all that practicing! The great Thai food and atmosphere at the restaurant also made it easy to enjoy - all the Pad Thai (Thai noodles and shrimp) did a quick disappearing act!.
However duty called. The pleasant early dinner ended and it was back to work at the Chapel. Time to study scores, correct registration and run through the program until it was perfect. A lot of preparation work for the big day.
The day of the concert finally arrived and was a beautiful spring day! While, undoubtedly, some folks decided to enjoy the weather and skip the indoor event, about 150 did stop by to take in the concert.
The eager fans showed up and started filling in the Chapel ....
And the concert began...
Some terrific playing with very engaging commentary.
The playing with commentary helped make the concert enjoyable for all.
The concert ended with lots of applause and an encore!
There was a rush to the reception, time to meet and greet this wonderful new artist!
The table finally got a bit empty and the guests gradually drifted out.
Which allowed time for Carol to leave and rendezvous with folks back at Hugh and Alice Young's house for a post-concert dinner. Alice, the ever gracious host, welcomed everyone in for a terrific dinner.
Her husband, Dr. Hugh Young, graced the table with pleasant dinner conversation.
Alice's terrific gourmet repast disappeared pretty quickly from the serving dishes......
Leaving several folks around the table pretty well satisfied.....!
And a table of empty plates....not a morsel was left!
Carol signed the Young's guest book leaving her seal of approval and adding to roles of performers who the Young's have graciously hosted for the OAS. Their hospitality and generosity continues to be a tremendous asset to the music community in Pittsburgh.
After a long day, Carol finally bids everyone a "good evening" and retires to get ready for a good night's rest before she dashes to the airport the next day for a trip to the far east!
