18-Mar-2012- Organ Artists Series Concert featuring Ken Cowan, of Westminster Choir College, at Saint Paul Cathedral in Oakland co-sponsored by Dr. Ross P. Cafaro in memory of his brother, Dr. Frank R. Cafaro.
Ken drove all the way across Pennsylvania from New Jersey to arrive in Pittsburgh on Friday before the Sunday concert.
He traveled light - everything that he needed was in the knapsack. In typical organist fashion the first thing to be done was to change from street shoes to organ shoes and begin to become familiar with the console.
The vast space of Saint Paul Cathedral was virtually empty; while was great since it enabled Ken to get in some good practice time.
There was quite an array of colors (stops) on the instrument to get used to. Critically important to get the registration of the instrument right for the color and character of each piece.
Ken practiced hard over the next days...
Of course, an organist also gets to give his feet a workout!
She brought her own seat....she's ready for the concert to begin
Ken (right) is also ready; he's been practice some warm-up scales on the piano nearby.
Listeners sat back for the start of a great concert....!
Ken provided some insightful comments before each piece; after which he played up a storm at the console - a minor feat of strength since this is a tracker where every key is physically connected to the pipes. That's a lot of finger exercise!
Intermission gave folks a chance to stretch and comment.

After intermission, the concert resumed with Ken peppering comments in between pieces.
A standing ovation was in order after the final piece! |

Folks adjourned to the reception for wine, cheese, shrimp and other treats - as well as to meet the performer and purchase some CDs which he graciously autographed!
The next day, the AGO Chapter had its regular meeting, dinner and a master class with Ken Cowan.
